Millbridge and Delran Intermediate School (Grades Kindergarten - 5th Grade) Science Curriculum


The expectations for your child’s science instruction changed in the Fall of 2017 when the New Jersey Department of Education adopted the Next Generation Science Standards as the New Jersey Student Learning Standards in Science (NJSLS). The revisions were applied in Fall 2017 for Grades K-5. All standard revisions are updated each summer to be in compliance with State mandates. What will science look like in a K-5 classroom?

  • Inquiry based

  • Hands-on

  • Student driven through real world questioning

  • Models created will explain a scientific idea

    • A majority of materials are provided

  • There may be “student choice” projects which may require students bring in items such as toilet paper tubes, cotton balls, a flashlight, etc… 

  • You will be notified if materials are needed

  • Elaboration through writing

  • Organization of a science notebook

  • Less memorization and more application of information


The Curriculum: Our science committees K-5 chose the National Geographic Exploring Science program after reviewing many programs correlated to the NGSS. That program includes an online component called MindTap.  These digital materials along with other supplemental programs like Mystery Science and Generation Genius, help our students learn in the three dimensions of science and engineering: Disciplinary Core Ideas, Science and Engineering Practices and Crosscutting Concepts.  


Even though our youngest learners are not taking an assessment from the State of New Jersey, the elementary standards assessed culminate in an assessment in Grade 5.  However, by State mandate, all students in K-2 will take benchmark assessments, which gauge the student learning in the 3 6-week cycles, alternating between social studies and science. Teachers will use many tools and strategies to get the students to synthesize all parts of the standards.     


Parents of Grade 5 students should anticipate an increase in rigor and expectation for writing and reasoning. Rote memorization is not the goal in science. Application of learning, including the synthesis of reasoning science phenomena, based on a prompt is the key. Talking about science phenomena and the learning happening in the classroom helps our students to share their thinking and question the world around them. A study session will occur prior to the test, and parents will be informed of additional online resources to help their students prepare. Delran Middle School (Grades 6-8) Science Curriculum

Grades 6-8’s  Science program aligns with the New Jersey Student Standards, which were adopted by the NJDOE in 2016 as the Next Generation Science Standards. To see the full list of student performances in science, by grade level, go to: 6th-8th Grade Science Performances and Indicators of Success

Students in Grade 8 are required to take a standardized 3 dimensional, performance based test, the  NJ Student Learning Assessment in Science. Teachers will use many tools and strategies to get the students to synthesize all parts of the standards.  You can go online to see the assessment examples for 8th grade by going to: http://measinc-nj-science.com/    Teachers in all three grade levels will  provide assessment items similar to these practice problems throughout the year to provide students an opportunity to achieve and exceed the standards. 

What will science look like in a 6-8 classroom?

  • Focus on Phenomena sparking curiosity and encouraging students to ask questions and investigate. 

  • Inquiry-Based Learning: Students actively participate in scientific investigations, collecting data, analyzing results, and drawing conclusions. 

  • Emphasis on Modeling: Students learn to develop and use models to represent scientific concepts and predict outcomes. 

  • Integration of Engineering Design:The integration of engineering design into science instruction, allowing students to apply scientific knowledge to solve real-world problems. 

  • Data Analysis and Interpretation: Students learn to collect, analyze, and interpret data to draw conclusions and support their explanations. 

  • Communication of Scientific Ideas: Students learn to communicate their findings and ideas clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing. 

Delran High School Science (Grades 9-12)

The High School Science program  expectations changed in the Fall of 2017 when the New Jersey Department of Education adopted the Next Generation Science Standards as the New Jersey Student Learning Standards in Science. Revisions were applied in Fall of 2016 for Grades 6-12 and  in Fall 2017 for Grades K-5.  The standards are now inclusive of:  Climate Change, Technology applications, English Language Arts and Mathematics standards.  To the see the full list of student performances in science, by grade level, go to: 9th-12th Grade Science Indicators of Success

To provide students with the most appropriate alignment to these high level standards, a student’s math and science course work must be aligned  (ex. Chemistry must coincide with Algebra 2 for skill acquisition to be achieved). Students may choose to take math course alignment or double up in math in Grades 9 or 10 in order to reach the highest level of science, AP Physics. Otherwise, every student will have the opportunity to reach CP or Honors Physics regardless of starting in Environmental Science in 9th Grade. 

As such, students in Grade 11 are required to take a standardized 3 dimensional, performance based test, NJSLA-Science. Much of the content of this assessment requires Earth & Space Science material, which is the development from our Environmental Science course. What will science look like in a 9-12 classroom?

  • A big shift from Passive to Active Learning: these standards move away from rote memorization and towards active engagement in scientific processes. 

  • Students are encouraged to ask questions, conduct experiments, and analyze data to build their understanding of scientific concepts. 

  • This approach promotes critical thinking, problem-solving, and scientific literacy.

  • Focus on Scientific and Engineering Practices:

  • Students learn by doing, engaging in activities like:

    • Developing and using models: Creating representations of complex systems to understand their behavior.

    • Planning and conducting investigations: Designing experiments and collecting data to test hypotheses.

    • Analyzing and interpreting data: Drawing conclusions from evidence and using data to support claims.

    • Constructing explanations: Using evidence and reasoning to explain scientific phenomena.

    • Designing solutions: Applying scientific knowledge to solve real-world problems.

  • These practices help students develop a deeper understanding of scientific concepts and how they are used in real-world contexts. 

  • NGSS emphasizes the relevance of science to everyday life and important societal issues, making science more engaging and relevant.  This approach helps students become more scientifically literate and better prepared to make informed decisions about science-related issues. (Ex. How does MRI technology work and why does it give us important health information?)
